Construction of the Nimbin Skate Park was approved by Lismore City Council in 2002, with works beginning in April of that year, after many months of planning by local skaters. Local youth and community members collectively volunteered thousands of hours to the construction of the skate park, with significant assistance from Tursa's Work-For-The-Dole program.
In 2004 the Nimbin Skate Park was a finalist for the Prime Minister's Work for the Dole Achievements Award in the category Best Work for the Dole Activity, winning the Caring for our Community section.
Work was stopped on the skate park in January 2005 due to noise complaints from local residents, as the ramps were being used before soundproofing had been completed. Since then three sound tests have been carried out at the skate park, and a variety of sound mitigation options explored.
In August 2007 Lismore City Council approved the NCDA to continue work on the skate park providing they can reduce sound output levels to the approval of all residents. We are confident that we can achieve this aim.
In September a community forum was held to gauge the level of community support for the completion of the project. Over 50 people met with representatives from the NCDA, local youth, concerned residents, and LCC to receive an update on what was happening with the project, and determine whether to continue with construction. The community was strongly supportive of the project and voted by an overwhelming majority to continue. A representative of local residents group concerned about the noise levels, stated that they were also supportive of local youth and the project, provided sound could be minimised.
In October, Friends of the Nimbin Skatepark, (FONS), was formed to explore soundproofing options and begin fundraising. The FONS is a voluntary collective that is committed to opening the skatepark permanently, our aim is to complete sound mitigation works to a standard that will be acceptable to nearby residents and deal with all other challenges faced by the project. We are currently finalising plans and working to raise the necessary funds to soundproof the ramp. The project has thus far been funded by contributions from the Premier's department, Family and Community Services, the Department of Sport and Recreation, Lismore City Council, Tursa's Work for the Dole project, and community fundraising.
The Nimbin Community Development Association, developer of the Skate Park, estimate we will need between $100,000 and $180, 000 to fund the completion of the project. We are confident that we can reduce these costs by utilising in-kind donations and support from local tradespeople and suppliers, several of whom offered to do so at the forum.
We believe that the positive benefits this project will bring to Nimbin make it deserving of your support. While we are seeking pledges of funding, we are also seeking advice about available grants and funding for community projects such as this.
